When used on a person, the entire focus is on the person and can be used to convey emotions or contribute to the naritive. It can also add a certain mystery or suspense to a character.

In this film, the shallow focus is used to represent the character as upset and ready to do something.

In this example photo of Noah, he is soloed out. The entire focus of the scene is now on him which puts the audiences full attention onto him. There is intense emotion of the character.
